Seeing tunnels, dead patches of grass, or chewed plants? You might be dealing with moles or voles. While they’re often confused, these two pests have very different habits – and cause very different types of damage.
MOLES: THE UNDERGROUND TUNNELER

Moles are solitary mammals (not rodents) that live underground. Key traits:
- Paddle-shaped front feet for digging
- Tiny eyes and poor vision
- Diet: earthworms, grubs, and insects
Damage: Raised tunnels, mounds of soil, and uprooted grass. They don’t eat plants, but their digging can wreck lawns.
Voles: The Plant Eaters

Voles resemble short-tailed mice and are active near the surface. Key traits:
- Stocky body, short tail
- Fast breeders
- Diet: roots, bulbs, seeds, and bark
Damage: Shallow runways in grass or mulch, gnawed plants and trees, especially in gardens or landscaped areas.
