Do you really need year-round termite protection in Missouri? Don't termites hide from the cold of winter? Yes. Termites are cold-blooded creatures that can die if the temperature gets too cold. This causes them to hide from the freezing cold, but before you get comfortable in this nice cozy thought, you might want to read down through these quick facts about termites.
1. Location, location, location.
In Missouri, the most damaging termites we have are the subterranean termites. These termites establish their colonies in the soil near a home they are infesting and build mud tubes up basement walls to feed on the wood of the home. If the colony is established in a crawl space under a home or in a spot where the ground is protected from the cold, these wood eaters will stay active all year long.
Sometimes these termites will build a satellite colony inside the walls of a home so workers don't have to travel all the way back out to the colony in the soil. If this is the case, the colony doesn't have to take a pause for the cold weather. It is plenty warm enough in the walls of your home for these wood eaters to keep working, even when the snow is piled up outside.
Termites don't stop. It's true! These insects eat and eat and eat. What is the reason for this? Worker termites don't need to sleep. In comparison to us, these are much simpler organisms and they don't need to be refreshed and repaired, like we do. So, there is really no need for downtime. They are wired to do only one thing, and that one thing is work. This will have them chewing on the wood inside your home 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and, under the right conditions, 365 days a year.
3. What you don't know can't hurt you, right?
Termites are silent destroyers. Imagine you are walking in the forest. It is a beautiful day. The sun is shining. The wind is blowing. You're not thinking about wolves or bears. But does that mean you're safe? Of course not! It is easy to think that we are safe from termites in the winter, and that can be dangerous. These insects can weaken your support beams and warp the structure of your home. You should never leave your home unprotected.
