Why Household Cleaners Won't Kill Ants

Thankfully spring is just around the corner and with it warmer weather, birds chirping, spring-cleaning, more time outdoors and unfortunately ants.  Yes, ants, in the spring the ground thaws and the soil warms up signaling to the ants that it is time to become active again.  Ants live in large social colonies with thousands of members, with different castes including workers, soldiers and the winged reproductive ants.  Ants generally nest underground, under rocks, under woodpiles, or under mulch in gardens.  They will then travel back and forth from their nest to their food source, following the same pheromone trail daily.  Ants will forage for food and water in St. Louis homes entering through cracks in foundations, gaps around windows and doors, or any other small gaps that they can access.

As a homeowner if you start seeing ants in your home your first instinct might be to grab a household cleaner to try to kill the ants.  While this method of ant control may seem to work at first, you are really only eliminating the foraging ants, and the foraging ants really only represent a very small portion of the entire colony.  The rest of the colony including the kings and queens are still intact, and more ants will continue to enter your home.  In order to really get rid of ants you need to eliminate all of the ants and the actual nest itself.  Ant control can be difficult to accomplish without help from a St. Louis pest control company.  Professional exterminators will be able to find the source of your ant problems, treat and eliminate your current ant problem and then help you to understand why they are attracted to your property; and will then be able to fix the areas of your home that are allowing the ants inside.  Prevention really is the best way to handle any pest problem, including ants.

If you are having difficulty with ants in your St. Louis home this spring, Rottler Pest & Lawn Solutions will work with you to get rid of ants from your home and property.  Our home pest control program is specifically designed to eliminate your current pest problems as well as maintain a pest-free home year-round and is far more effective than grabbing a bottle of household cleaner and attacking the marching ants in the kitchen.  The Signature Protection program includes an initial visit where one of our professionals will complete a thorough inspection of your home, followed by an initial service visit where the perimeter of your structure will be treated along with the interior to completely eliminate your current ant or other pest problem.

After the initial visit and treatment we will return every other month, focusing on the exterior of your home in order to find and prevent other pests before they get the chance to make it into your home.  The regular every other month service visits include:

  • Inspection and treatment of the exterior of your home.

  • Application of a perimeter barrier treatment around your home.

  • Check and refill rodent bait stations (if applicable).

  • Treat all possible pest entry points, like around windows and doors.

  • Inspect miscellaneous areas around your home such as sheds, garages and decks and treat areas in necessary.

If indoor treatment is ever needed during a regular service visit it will be done at no charge to you.  And termite control can also be added to this program for an additional charge.

If you are having difficulty with ants or any other pests contact the professionals at Rottler Pest & Lawn Solutions.  We will be happy to assist you in the removal of any unwanted house guests, taking the stress of pest control off of your shoulders so that all you have to worry about is enjoying the warm spring weather!
