You have probably heard by now that traveling is one of the easiest ways to encounter bed bugs. That’s because there are thousands of people flying, staying in hotels and catching cabs everyday. It’s no wonder that bed bugs have a field day latching onto luggage or even your clothing to hitch a ride to their next destination. At Rottler, we say it’s time for bed bugs to back off! Which is why we want to share with you some tips on how to prevent bed bugs from getting anywhere near your clothes and/or luggage as well as how to inspect your luggage for bed bugs.
Tip #1 - When you begin packing, it is best to pack all of your clothing into large bags with a zipper, airtight seal. This way, even if bed bugs find their way into your suitcase, they will not be able to get into your clothing and hide out.
Tip #2 - At your hotel, after you have inspected your room for bed bugs, keep all luggage off the floor by using luggage stands provided as an extra measure of prevention. Click here for some great bed bug inspection tips!
Tip #3 - When you arrive home, keep all of your bags and suitcases outside or in the garage for inspection. This way, if there are any signs of bed bugs, you will catch them before they are carried into your home. Also, take all of your clothing straight to the laundry room and wash in the hottest temperatures possible to help eliminate any living bugs or eggs.
Tip #4 - Use a flashlight to search for common signs of a bed bug infestation both inside and outside of your luggage:
small dark spots (fecal matter left behind from bed bugs)
their skin encasements which are light brown, almost translucent
live bed bugs which as adults can be up to the size/shape of an apple seed
Tip #5 - Vacuum out each suitcase thoroughly before you bring them into the home and toss them back into the closet for next year’s vacation. If there are still bed bugs attached to your luggage, it will only be a matter of time before they find their way into your space
