If the song was true, and ants only came marching in one by one, or two by two, or even ten by ten, then ant season (aka springtime) wouldn't be so bad. But, the truth is, sometimes ants come marching in by the hundreds or, if you're really unlucky, the thousands. That is when destructive ants, or simply nuisance ants, become a real problem.
Odorous House Ants
An odorous house ant has a distinct odor that has been described as the smell of rotten coconuts. While there are other ants that give off an odor when squished, this one can be a particular problem because this one likes to come inside. These ants are dark brown to black with a beehive-shaped abdomen, 1 flat, hidden node between its thorax and abdomen, and workers grow to be around 3 mm long.
Carpenter ants are large, black or reddish ants which can grow to be as long as 13 mm in length. They have a single, pointed node between the thorax and the abdomen and, while they have the word "carpenter" in their name, they are not out to build or fix anything. They are destructive pests, second only to termites, when it comes to destroying the wooden structures of a home, as they chew tunnels and galleries to live and breed in.
These ants are approximately 1/8 of an inch long. They live in the cracks of the pavement, in sidewalks, under concrete slabs, and other outside places. But sometimes they get into buildings. Often, they will come in through basement walls. Unlike odorous house ants and carpenter ants, these little critters are simply a nuisance.
Ant Prevention Tips
Make sure to keep all of your outside trash stored in tightly sealed containers, so as not to draw ants in with the smell.
Inspect the outside of your home for gaps or cracks and seal them up.
Make sure all of your screens and door sweeps are present and in good working order.
