St. Louis (KSDK) - If you are headed outside this Memorial Day weekend, pack the bug spray and keep an eye out for critters. Pest control experts say this year's tick season is one of the worst on record.
The phones at Rottler Pest & Lawn Solutions have been ringing off the hook.
"The numbers are up with the ticks," said Rottler's Jason Everitt. "The calls that come in are, 'that my dogs are running about the yard. Next thing I know is that they're covered in ticks.'"
And if your pup's getting bitten out in the yard, you could be next.
"They come off of the grass and jump on to people and animals," said St. Louis County Vector Control employee Drew Hane.
St. Louis County's vector control department keeps an eye on ticks and other problematic pests.
"We might see a little bit higher population with ticks this season, but more so that it will start earlier and go longer," Hane said. "So it has already started and it will go well into the fall."
Not exactly what you want to hear going into a busy outdoor-oriented weekend.
"Nothing to discourage anyone from enjoying the outdoors, but there are some things that you can do to take precautions, like using bug spray and pesticides," Hane said. And he also recommends wearing long pants, light clothes, and of course checking for ticks after you're finished having fun.
"Check your hairline, your armpits, your waistline, between your legs," Hane said. "Those are the primary areas for ticks to try to latch on."
