Fall has come and gone; it is the middle of December, and Christmas is less than two weeks away! Here in St. Louis, the weatherman is calling for temperatures as low as 30 degrees tonight. Many people have fired up the woodstove in their efforts to stay warm. Unfortunately, there are many different pests that call that wood their home. This includes:
Rodents – Many people instantly think of mice when they hear the term rodent, but the order of rodents actually includes rats, squirrels, and chipmunks as well. While they may not come inside with you when you carry in the wood, they are more than capable of giving quite the scare if they unexpectedly jump out of the woodpile straight at you!
Spiders – You more than likely have many spiders hiding in your stacks of firewood. Firewood provides a perfect harborage for many different species of spiders that are common in Missouri, including black widows, brown recluses, wolf spiders, and more.
Ants – Common species of ants in Mid-Missouri include odorous house ants, carpenter ants, pavement ants, pharaoh ants, and more. With the cold weather outside, any ants hiding in the wood will be dormant; however, after you bring the wood inside and it warms up, the ants may wake up, and get loose in your house.
Beetles – As with the ants, beetles may get loose inside your home by hiding away in the wood that you are bringing inside. Common beetles include ground beetles, powderpost beetles, and longhorned beetles.
