With summer fast approaching, have you thought much about your lawn? You may be more concerned with getting your beach body ready, but we are here to tell you- forget about that beach body and pay attention to the lawn! With a beautiful green lawn and landscape, you’ll be the envy of the neighborhood (and chances are no one will notice that you didn’t wear that two piece suit this year!). What can you do to get your lawn ready for the summer season? Here are our top 5 tips for summer lawn care from your St. Louis lawn care professionals at Rottler Pest & Lawn Solutions.
Lawns need feeding too. In the spring and early summer, many types of grass should be fertilized. Warm weather grass (like Bermuda grass) also needs to be fertilized in the late summer to make sure your lawn is getting all the appropriate nutrients. If you have any questions on this, our St. Louis lawn care pros can help.
Lawns get thirsty on hot summer days. In the same way you need water during a hot day, so does your lawn. However, we don’t recommend watering during the hottest part of the day- instead water first thing in the morning so that the grass has all day to dry and the water can really soak in. A good thorough watering is the best way to go- just don’t do it every day.
Mow more than once a week. Your grass should be mowed frequently but your mower setting should be set slightly higher. This allows the grass to grow better roots and become stronger, allowing it to survive hotter and drier summer days (and it keeps in more moisture this way too!). It can also help reduce the number of weeds that infiltrate your lawn.
Be proactive about lawn pests. Moles and other lawn pests can cause serious problems to your lawn and to your landscaping. They can uproot plants, destroy grass root systems and make unsightly mounds of soil on top of your grass. To prevent lawn pests we suggest giving us a call to discuss our mole control program as well as summer lawn care services, which also includes insect control.
Do what you can to prevent property damages. Stray tree branches and debris in your landscape can become a problem during a summer storm, breaking windows, causing roof problems and other significant property damage. Take care of the problems you can now by making sure to cut back tree branches that appear weak or dead and picking up any debris on your property that shouldn’t be there. Not only will this protect your home in the event of a summer storm, but it will make your property look more beautiful too!
