(KTVI) – It feels like spring sprung overnight and the warmer, moister air is here. Termites are loving it! Just saying the word “termite” can make a homeowner panic.

Gary Rottler from Rottler Pest and Lawn Solutions spoke with Elliot about termites in the spring. Termites cause $5 billion in damage to US buildings and they live in every state except Alaska.

  • Termite tunnels are the size of a pencil with a sandy texture. Usually found near front porches, garages, foundation, sill plate in basement, under decks/overhangs.

  • In St. Louis, termites swarm in March/April. They emerge in large numbers.

  • They eat and digest the wood, causing damage to the structure.

  • Identification is key. Termites are often mistaken for flying ants.

  • Follow the water. Moisture is number one draw – leaky faucets, etc.

  • If termite signs are there, call a professional.
