What are carpenter ants?

In the US, there are over 700 species of ants. There are 9 different types of carpenter ants in the US and they tend to be found in cool and damp climates. Most ants are considered to be nuisance pests, but carpenter ants are more than just a nuisance because they can destroy the wood in the structure of your home while they build their nests. Although carpenter ants vary in size, they are typically between ¼ of an inch to ¾ of an inch in length; they are usually black or red or a combination of those two colors.

How can you tell if you have a carpenter ant problem?

If you have carpenter ants inside your St. Louis home, you’ll see a few telltale signs. These signs include:

  • Sawdust or ‘frass’ near wood that has been previously water damaged

  • Tiny holes in timbers that almost look like little windows inside the wood

  • You may see wood that appears to be hollowed out or have tunnels running through it

  • Dead or alive carpenter ants can typically be spotted around your home on occasion

What can you do to get rid of carpenter ants?

Getting rid of carpenter ants on your own is not an easy task. These insects will first enter your home to forage for food but then may tunnel into the wood of your home’s structure to build galleries and nests. If you have food lying around or previously water damaged wood in your home’s structure, you could be creating an environment that attracts carpenter ants. You can make sure to keep food stored away in tightly closed containers and keep kitchens and pantries clean of food crumbs and spills. You can also make sure that any areas of water damaged wood in your home’s exterior are replaced so as to not attract nesting carpenter ants. These options will not take care of a carpenter ant problem once it has taken root inside your home however; if you already have these pests infesting your structure, you will need help from pest control professionals to take care of the problem.
