It’s that time of the year again - fleas and ticks are back! That means it’s time to prepare your home, family and pets for a season when flea infestations and tick bites are more common than you may like to think. Prevention is the best way to avoid the drama of a massive flea infestation in your home and also to avoid the potential spread of Lyme disease from a tick bite. From our St. Louis pest control professionals, here are a few tips to prevent fleas and ticks on your pets and yourself!
Prevent fleas and ticks on your pets
Stay up to date on flea and tick treatments from the veterinarian’s office. These are usually more effective than store bought brands. You want to make sure that treatments are given as directed, especially through the spring and summer months when both fleas and ticks are most active.
Check your pets for ticks by running your hand through their fur while looking for any bumps on the skin that could be a tick trying to feed.
Try to bath your pet often as this will drown fleas and wash off ticks if they are not already latched onto the skin.
Vacuum your home regularly and wash your pets bedding to help kill off any critters.
Try to avoid walks in heavily wooded areas and if you are in the woods, keeping your dog on a leash, on the path is the best way to avoid tick encounters.
Prevent fleas and ticks on you
Walk along the middle of paths when out in the woods because many ticks are lingering on the transitional areas where the edge of the path meets the woods.
Wear light colored clothing so you can see ticks more easily. Also, wear clothing that covers your entire body so that there is less easy access to your skin.
Apply insect repellent that contains DEET (even over clothed areas) to help ward off ticks and other insects when spending time in the woods or other areas known for infestations.
Vacuum your home and wash your bedding on a regular basis to help avoid the spread of fleas.
