Have you ever heard the song, "Deck the halls with German roaches! Fa la la la la, la la la laaaaaa!"? No? It’s not surprising, because cockroaches make horrible holiday decorations. Not only are they not festive AT ALL, they are extraordinarily disgusting.
Do you have cockroaches in your home that fancy themselves as holiday decorations? Have you found one perched on your mantle, just above some stockings that were hung by the chimney with care or next to a snow globe of Frosty the Snowman? Have you seen one clinging to your wall, next to cutouts of snowflakes and pictures of Santa? Have you found one hanging from the ceiling as if it could take the place of mistletoe or strings of lights? We have some ideas to help you keep cockroaches from getting into your home this holiday season. And, how to get them out, if they are already a problem. Read on.
Keep cockroaches from adorning the walls of your home this holiday season with Integrated Pest management (IPM). What is IPM? It is a process, based on scientific research, which solves pest problems in a natural way while protecting your family and the environment. Here are few IPM methods that will help you keep cockroaches from becoming bad decorations in your home.

  • Reduce food and water sources: Store food in tightly sealed plastic containers. Keep garbage in cans with tight-fitting lids. Clean up all food spills immediately. Clean in hard to reach places such as under the fridge and between the counter and stove regularly.

  • Eliminate hiding places: Remove clutter, such as stacks of newspapers, boxes, rags and other things that cockroaches can hide in.

  • Clean: Vacuum cracks and crevices to remove food and debris. Thoroughly clean the house, especially in places where food particles are present.

  • Seal any gaps or cracks in your foundation or exterior walls.

  • Fix all holes in screens, or replace with new ones.

  • Make sure all door sweeps are in good working order.

  • Remove moisture from your home by using dehumidifiers and/or fans.
