Isn't it amazing to just be able to sit down and rest after a hard day’s work? It feels good, doesn't it? You know the job is done and it has been done right. Now you can simply relax and enjoy the quiet satisfaction. It’s nice to enjoy some down time with family and friends, to feast and laugh and unwind. As humans, we sometimes have this luxury, to simply be, and not work. Isn't it wonderful? Household pests do not have this luxury.

Pests work and work and work. They reproduce, then work some more. When the cold weather comes, they don't let the cold stop them; they simply look for a more comfortable place to stay. Then they continue working. And as they work, they cause problems. Spiders not only build webs for us to walk through, some bite and cause serious reactions. Rodents don't only sleep in your attic, they forage in garbage and sewers then bring disease into your home. Cockroaches don't just hang out in your wall voids; they can trigger asthma and allergies. This is why it is important to do everything you can to keep pests out of your home.

What you can do to prevent pests this winter:

  • Examine the outside of your home for cracks and gaps. Be sure to check areas where pipes and air conditioners and other things enter the home. Seal any holes found by using a caulking gun. Remember, a mouse can squeeze through a hole the size of a dime.

  • Repair or replace loose mortar and weather stripping around windows and basement foundation.

  • If you have a woodpile, store the wood at least 20 feet away from your home. Mice and ants make nests in firewood and if it is close to your home, they will be more likely to find entrance to your house.

  • Keep storage areas well organized and uncluttered. Store boxes off the floor. Rodents like to hide in clutter.

  • Get rid of moisture. Fix leaky pipes and clogged drains. Use dehumidifiers and/or fans to dry out wet/humid areas of your home.

  • Make sure all your door sweeps and screens are in good repair.

  • Put screens in chimney openings and drain pipes to keep rodents from crawling in.
