There are many reasons to love summer in Springfield. Ants aren't one of them. In fact, ants aren't seven of them. Here are seven species of ant you can expect to see on your Springfield property and in your Springfield home this summer.
These are probably the worst ants you can have crawling around in your backyard but, surprisingly, we pay little attention to them when we see them. This is because we don't recognize them as carpenter ants. They're just black ants. But you might want to take a closer look if you see black ants (or reddish-black ants). Carpenter ants chew tunnels and galleries in wood and are able to do significant damage to a home.
These tiny yellow and reddish ants are a health threat because they carry bacteria from trash, sewers, carrion, and other nasty things, right into our kitchens and pantries. They can also establish colonies with as many as a million ants!
Odorous House Ants
These dark brown or black ants enter homes accidentally when looking for food. When they do, they can get into pantry and kitchen foods. The worst part about having these ants around is the smell they emit when crushed.
Pavement Ants, Acrobat Ants, Field Ants
These are all nuisance ants. They are generally considered to be nuisance pests because they drive us crazy when we're trying to enjoy our backyards. These pests will come inside if they find an easy entry point.
Small Honey Ants
While you're most likely to find these ants outside, when they get in, they can sometimes establish nests in potted plants. This puts them even higher on the nuisance pest scale.
How Do You Get Rid Of Ants?
Each ant is different. They have different habitat preferences, different food preferences, and different behavioral patterns. This can make them extremely difficult to control. In fact, DIY ant control attempts often make the problem worse by causing nests to split. The best solution is to invest in ongoing pest control service. Ants are just one of a long list of pests that can cause health issues, damage your property, and make themselves a nuisance.
