happy new year

How do you plan to ring in the New Year? In the U.S. there is no shortage of ways to do it. Some will don ridiculous hats and sparkly glasses. Some will usher in the new year with a joyful sound from kazoos, cowbells, silver horns, and other noise makers. There will be pilgrimages to Times Square to watch the ball drop amidst a sky of confetti, and others who will gather around the television to watch the celebration remotely. There will be dancing, fireworks, costumes, gifts, and lots of kisses. But, most important of all, there will be gatherings of friends and family all yelling with one voice, "Happy New Year!"

There are a lot of New Year's traditions, but the one thing they all seem to have in common is food. And, where there is food, there is bound to be spills and crumbs. This can lead to an increase in pest populations in your home.

To help you fight those unwelcome pests in 2016, we've put together a quick list of helpful tips. And, as you can imagine, hiding food sources is top on our list.

Pest prevention tips for 2016

  • Keep your home free of food particles. Insects and rodents are drawn to crumbs, spills and other food sources. Carefully clean areas where food is prepared and served, paying close attention to places like the bottom of the toaster or under the fridge.

  • Clean carpets and floors regularly.

  • Periodically deep clean the sides of your oven where grease and drippings can accumulate.

  • Keep your home relatively dry. Mop up any areas where there are water leaks and fix those leaks. Also use fans or a dehumidifier to remove moisture.

  • Use a caulking gun to seal up gaps and cracks in your foundation, walls, and roof areas.

  • Store firewood away from your home and off the ground.

  • Create a dry area around your home using rocks. Moisture near your house brings bugs in close.

  • Clear your yard of clutter. Insects and rodents love to hide in clutter. And, often clutter collects water, which gives them something to drink.

  • Contact a professional pest control company.

Sometimes when you've done all you can to get pests out of your home, or tried to keep them out, some manage to get in anyway. The best course of action to be fully protected is to have year-round pest protection in place. At Rottler Pest & Lawn Solutions, we offer our Signature Pest Protection plan, designed to eliminate pests from the first to the last day of the year. Stopping pests before they get in is the best way to start 2016 off right.
